Jakarta, March 18 -- Indonesia's corrections ministry linked the values of Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, to its rehabilitation-focused prison programs as it granted sentence reductions to more than 1,500 inmates.
Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto said the philosophy of Nyepi aligns with efforts to shift corrections away from punishment toward rehabilitation and self-improvement.
Speaking in remarks delivered by Director General of Corrections Mashudi at Cipinang Detention Center in Jakarta on Wednesday, Andrianto referred to this year's Nyepi theme, "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family."
