Jakarta, Oct. 8 -- Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar urged all Islamic boarding schools (pesantrens) to be more adaptive in addressing structural risks of their buildings.

"We are seeking to continuously coordinate so that pesantrens can mitigate risks related to their physical buildings," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Iskandar underlined that mitigation efforts are essential to guarantee the safety of students and to prevent building collapses like the one that occurred at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, recently.

He noted that the majority of pesantrens in Indonesia are old and the buildings are no longer sturdy.
