Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes NTT, triggering minor tsunamis
Kupang, NTT, Aug. 15 -- Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mbay Village in Nagekeo District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), triggering minor tsunami waves across several coastal areas.
The agency issued a Level II tsunami warning after the tremor occurred at 5:58 a.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA) on Saturday.
Head of Kupang Geophysics Station Arief Tyastama said the epicenter was located at 8.41 degrees south latitude and 121.39 degrees east longitude.
"It was located approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) off the coast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles)," Tyastama noted.
