Jakarta, July 14 -- Indonesia has urged the United States and Iran to continue to abide by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on peace signed in Islamabad last month and to immediately cease hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz.

"The MoU was signed yesterday and we hope both parties will continue to respect it," Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said after attending the 6th Indonesia-Vietnam Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He emphasised that restoring stability to the Gulf region is a matter of direct national interest, warning that a prolonged conflict would have immediate economic consequences for the Indonesian public.
