Indonesia touts water security as foundation for defense, development
Jakarta, May 28 -- Indonesia's deputy foreign minister said water security has become a strategic pillar of global development and stability as rising demand, climate pressures and industrial expansion reshape geopolitical risks.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir delivered the remarks during the Dushanbe Water Conference 2026 in Tajikistan, held from May 25-28.
"Water has now become a strategic resource that also underpins the global digital economy," Nasir said in a statement on Thursday.
Nasir said future competition among countries may increasingly center on access to and control over water resources, shifting from earlier conflicts focused on oil and land.
