Jakarta, Sept. 8 -- Indonesia reopened five airports affected by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau early Tuesday after aviation authorities determined conditions were safe.

"The closure of Soekarno-Hatta Airport and several other airports affected by Mount Anak Krakatau's volcanic ash has ended," Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Operations resumed at 12:01 a.m. local time on Tuesday, he said, following a safety assessment of the affected airports and surrounding airspace.

Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Banten, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, the capital of West Java Province, resumed operations at 12:01 a.m. on September 8.
