Jakarta, Feb. 11 -- Indonesia's West Kalimantan Province is battling forest and land fires that have scorched about 435 hectares of mineral and peatland since January 1, authorities said Wednesday.

The fires have spread across 11 districts and two cities, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Spokesman Abdul Muhari said in Jakarta.

Of the total area burned, around 235 hectares have been extinguished through cross-sector operations, while the remainder is still undergoing firefighting and cooling efforts at multiple hotspots, he said.

Affected areas include the cities of Singkawang and Pontianak, as well as the districts of Kubu Raya, Sambas, Mempawah, Sintang, Melawi, Kayong Utara, Ketapang, Sanggau, Bengkayang, Landak and Sekadau...
