Jakarta, July 11 -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono paid his respects to the late Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at his burial site in the holy city of Mashhad on Friday (July 10).

The visit came after a major geopolitical shift in the Middle East following Khamenei's death on February 28, 2026, in a US-Israeli military strike in Tehran.

Khamenei had served as Iran's highest political and religious authority for nearly 37 years.

"Indonesia will remember His Excellency (Ali Khamenei) as a respected Islamic scholar and an important figure in the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Iran," Sugiono wrote on his official social media account, monitored from Jakarta on Saturday.
