Jakarta, Aug. 15 -- Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara Province on Saturday was triggered by the Flores back-arc thrust fault.

"The Flores back-arc fault has a maximum earthquake potential of 7.8 to 7.9. Today, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred," Wijayanto, director of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said.

He said a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the region in 1992, causing severe damage.

"After more than 30 years, such a strong earthquake has occurred again. We will continue to closely monitor aftershocks," Wijayanto said.

BMKG lifted its tsunami early warning at 7:30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), or 0030 GMT.
