India, Aug. 20 -- Sajjan Kumar, convicted in multiple 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases, was declared brought dead at Safdarjung Hospital after being shifted from Tihar Jail.

Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, died on Thursday at the age of 80 while serving a life sentence at Delhi's Tihar Jail.

Kumar was declared brought dead at Safdarjung Hospital after being shifted from the prison. The hospital had not immediately clarified the cause of his death.

Kumar was an influential Jat leader whose later political career was overshadowed by cases related to the anti-Sikh riots that followed the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
