Sri Lanka, April 30 -- The Supreme Court issued an interim order today (30 April) barring the President and the Constitutional Council from proposing judges for the Supreme Court, with the exception of the Chief Justice role.

The Supreme Court has granted permission to hear a petition alleging the violation of basic human rights due to the Constituent Assembly's rejection of the President's recommendation to appoint the current Court of Appeal Judge Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne as a Supreme Court judge. Additionally, the Court issued an interim order to both the President and the Constitutional Council, barring nominations for all Supreme Court judge positions except that of Chief Justice.
