Lucknow, Aug. 9 -- Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Sunday opposed any move to introduce a creamy layer system for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), arguing that reservation is a constitutional instrument for social justice, equality and dignity, rather than merely an economic benefit.

In a statement issued on social media, Mayawati said caste discrimination and atrocities against marginalised communities had not been completely eradicated and, therefore, reservation could not be determined solely by a person's economic status.

She termed any discussion on introducing a creamy layer system for reservation benefits available to the SC and ST communities inappropriate.
