Tokyo, Feb. 26 -- A passenger car has crashed into a crowd of tourists in Japan's western city of Nara, leaving two people with serious injuries that turned fatal for one of them, Japanese media have reported.

A 79-year-old owner of a local souvenir shop drove his car into a crowd of tourists on Sunday in the ancient Japanese capital city of Nara, the NHK broadcaster reported.

One of the two people who were hit by the car was a Taiwanese tourist who suffered injuries to their head and died three hours later, the broadcaster said. The other victim suffered a severe fracture injury to their lower back bones.

The driver was detained on suspicion of negligence causing death. He confessed to mixing up the brake and gas pedals.
