Dhaka, March 24 -- Caesarean-sections, or C-sections, have outnumbered normal deliveries in the country, as over half of the total childbirths took place through C-sections in 2023, according to the latest demographic surveillance.

Of the total childbirths, 50.07 per were delivered through C-sections, while 49.03 were delivered normally, according to the report Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics 2023 conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Sunday.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 10 to 15 per cent of C-sections are acceptable.

The percentage of normal childbirth was higher at 58.06 per cent in 2022, indicating almost a 9 per cent increase in C-sections, according to the survey.
