New Delhi, March 16 -- With schedule of Lok Sabha polls to be announced on Saturday, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will come into force immediately. Interestingly, the first exercise to have such a conduct was carried out during the Assembly elections in 1960 in Kerala.

The dos and don'ts for political parties subsequently evolved over the last 60 years to assume its present form, according to the Election Commission.

The MCC is a set of conventions agreed upon by all stakeholders during the elections. Its objective is to keep campaign, polling and counting orderly, clean and peaceful and check any abuse of state machinery and finances by the party in power. It does not enjoy any statutory backing.
