Sri Lanka, March 4 -- The Kurunduwatta Police have arrested a retired SSP who was fleeing after causing an accident while driving a car under the influence of liquor.

Police had given chase to a fleeing car that hit a pedestrian at the Rajakeeya Mawatha pedestrian crossing and hit another car at the Thunmulla junction last Friday.

They had been able to intercept the vehicle at Jawatta and had found out the driver was a retired Senior Superintendent of Police. An Austrian-made pistol and eight rounds of ammunition were also found in the car that caused the accident.

The investigation revealed that the firearm was licensed. Police said that this retired SSP is a resident of the Anderson flats in Colombo 5.
