Sri Lanka, March 8 -- SLPP MP Rohitha Abeygunawardane was elected as the new Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) chairman yesterday with the majority of votes.

He was elected when the first meeting of the COPE for the Fifth Session of the Ninth Parliament was held in Parliament yesterday. Initially, the names of MPs Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Gamini Waleboda were proposed for the post of COPE Chairman. MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena was proposed by MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage and seconded by the MP Sanjeeva Edirimanna. Name of MP Gamini Waleboda was proposed by MP Hesha Withanage and confirmed by the MP Dilan Perera. Accordingly, the voting was held and MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena was elected with the majority of votes.
