Sri Lanka, May 1 -- The Supreme Court on Monday (29) granted leave to proceed to a Fundamental Rights petition filed by a person who is a driver by profession against a group of Excise Officers of Kurunegala office who had arrested, assaulted and tortured him in their custody in 2020.

The 44-year-old petitioner Gameni Priyantha Bandara is a resident of Kahapathwela, Kurunegala and he has filed the petition seeking compensation from the respondents.

The Supreme Court granted leave to proceed when the petition was considered before a three-judge bench presided by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, PC.
